Jiekai Liao
リャオ・チエカイ
Liao Jiekai is a filmmaker and artist based in Tokyo. He received his Bachelors of Fine Arts degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2008, and co-founded film collective 13 Little Pictures upon returning to Singapore. His short and feature films were widely screened in international film festivals such as Tokyo, Shanghai, Torino, Nantes and Buenos Aires, most notably Red Dragonflies which won the Special Jury Prize at the Jeonju International Film Festival. At the same time, he spearheaded the film and media art program at the School of the Arts, Singapore where he taught for a decade. In 2012, he received the Young Artist Award for filmmaking from the National Arts Council of Singapore. In 2020, he received a Master degree for film directing from Tokyo University of the Arts, having studied under film directors Kurosawa Kiyoshi and Suwa Nobuhiro. In 2021, he co-founded Tokyo-based production company Prism Pictures with producer Furuichi Akiho.

シンガポールの新進気鋭の映画制作チーム「13 Little Pictures」の創設メンバーのひとり。
2005年以降、いくつもの短編映画を監督し、国際的な評価を得ている。特に『Before the Wedlock House』は第2回サラヤ国際ドキュメンタリー映画祭で最優秀短編ドキュメンタリー賞を受賞、『The Mist』はシンガポール国際映画祭のシルバースクリーン賞で最優秀監督賞を受賞している。
2010年の長編デビュー作『赤とんぼ』は全州国際映画祭で審査員特別賞を受賞し、ブエノスアイレス、サンティアゴ、香港、上海、東京などさまざまな国際映画祭でコンペティション部門に選出されている。
日本での大きな上映歴としては、『赤とんぼ』(2010)、『あの頃のように』(2014)、『蛾の光』(2020)の過去三回、東京国際映画祭にて長編映画が上映されている。
2012年、シンガポール国立芸術評議会からヤングアーティスト賞（映画部門）を授与される。2013年にシンガポール美術館で開催されたPresident's Young Talent Exhibitionで発表した16mmフィルムインスタレーション『Brother's Quarters』でCredit Suisse Artist Commissioning Awardを受賞し、同年、ビデオインスタレーション『Bukit Orang Salah』でシンガポール・ビエンナーレに招待される。長編第2作『あの頃のように』はトリノ映画祭、ナント3大陸映画祭でコンペティション部門に出品された。
IMDAデジタル奨学生であり、黒沢清、諏訪敦彦の指導のもと、2020年に東京藝術大学大学院映像研究科映画監督専攻修士課程を修了。2021年に古市あきほと合同会社プリズムピクチャーズを共同設立したのち、シンガポールと日本の共同制作作品を数多く手掛けている。
